Loneliness

Loneliness is the poverty of self; solitude is the richness of self.
— May Sarton

Hello Friends,

Loneliness is bound to kick in with the holiday season and changes the way we usually celebrate. Avoid the slippery slope of emotions that can negatively impact yourself and your holiday cheer. There are many ways to feel connected with others and to stimulate your mind to combat loneliness. I am writing this blog to help push the loneliness away and create pathways to fight it during this time.

Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way to cure loneliness and feelings of depression. Not only are you helping those in need, but you will also receive feelings of empowerment, happiness, and fulfillment. This time will also bring you closer to others and the community you live in and keeps regular contact with others which aids your development of a solid support system. This support system will shield you from depression and loneliness, especially in challenging times. There are many places and people that need volunteers. I encourage and challenge you to find a cause that inspires you and donate your time.

Go Virtual

With technological advancement today, we have access to connect with loved ones and a variety of people all over the world. Utilizing this technology is a great way to combat loneliness this holiday season. For instance, plan virtual dates with family and friends. There are many things for you to do online, for example, watch a movie together or prepare a meal you cook and eat together. Virtually cooking with my loved ones was my personal favorite partake. It felt like we were all in the kitchen together even though we were on a screen. Another plus to going virtual is that many platforms allow access to people in your community. Two applications that I enjoy are the Nextdoor App and the Meet Up app. They provide virtual and in-person events for all interests, which is excellent for battling loneliness.

Self-Care

Taking this time to indulge in care of yourself enhances your relationship with your being as well as boosts confidence. It could be a massage or simply taking a break when doing a task, and it doesn’t matter how you take care of yourself as long as you take the time to do it. Also, remember to take care of yourself while at work. Create a healthy balance between work and life, such as schedule break times and set boundaries. Doing this will keep you motivated and skills sharp for work. This care is a personal reminder that your needs are essential and can help stimulate your mind during these lonely times. I also want to remind those who believe in religious or spiritual views to take some time out to get guidance from them. Find a verse, quote, or prayer that can remind you that you are not alone; put it somewhere that you will see it often.

Keep your mind productive and healthy this holiday season by volunteering, going virtual, and practicing good self-care. Doing any of these will make you feel connected with yourself and others.  Say goodbye to loneliness and hello to holiday cheer!
