Procrastination

Procrastination is your body telling you; you need to back off a bit and think more about what you are doing.
— James Altucher

Hello Friends,

I hope everyone is off to a great start today. This week’s topic is procrastination and how it can cause your harmony to be off within yourself. We have many reasons for procrastinating, such as anxiety, fear, or not wanting to do a task.  Regardless, people procrastinate, even when they know it hinders them. Eliminate the mindset of not wanting to do a job that needs to get done and replace it with a philosophy of valuing time and yourself. Procrastination is delaying or postponing something and waiting till the last minute to get things done, which can cause stress, guilt, and regret. When last-minute work is done, your true potential cannot be seen by yourself or others. No longer allow excuses to stand in the way of what you need to get done to reach the ultimate harmony within.

Step #1: Why?

The first step is determining why you procrastinate. It takes self-reflection to determine if you need help or can do it alone. Ask yourself, “why do I have trouble persuading myself to do things that I need or would like to do?” Once you have an answer to that question, you can do research or reach out to a professional to help you move forward and accomplish the tasks at hand more timely and proactively. One tip is to keep track of the times of day you are more productive and less productive, then schedule functions in the productive time frames. For instance, I am more effective in the morning, but my motivation decreases as the day goes by. I tackle my to-do list for the day earlier to eliminate stress and pressure and even adds an extra hour to my day at the night's end.

Step #2: How?

The next step is the how and how to develop motivation, which is a willingness to do something.  Nowadays, we need a reason to be willing to do something. That saying, there needs to be a reward or advance for us to be motivated, leading to less procrastination. Think about what will encourage you. It can be winning, money, a night out, or less stress. Determining what motivates you will take trial and error, and while on the journey, you are in complete control of deciding what works best for you. This motivation creates a reward system of things that will make you happy and keep you on track to finishing the desired task. Quick tip make sure these motivators are things that will not decrease your self-value over time.  Think about what makes you happy, then use that as a reward.

Step #3: Where?

Step 3 is where and where you will document your plan to tackle procrastination successfully. By creating a concrete action plan, you can avoid thinking and planning in your mind but never taking action. Self-control is needed at this step to stay on track to reach your ultimate harmony. Be mindful of the ability to control emotions and desires, especially in procrastination. Self-control and motivation support each other by continuing the willingness to stay on track with meeting your goals. Take note of everything that needs attending to and break down big tasks into smaller tasks if needed. Determine the actions required on your part to get the job completed. I recommend writing this down and putting it in place often seen, such as a fridge or bathroom mirror. It also helps you get others involved by helping you stay on track. And don’t forget to reward yourself after each goal is met.

Letting go of procrastination takes a strong sense of motivation and self-control. As well as understanding why you procrastinate and embracing asking for help when needed. Let go of the excuses standing in the way of what you need to get done to reach the ultimate harmony within and unlock your true potential.
